In 1905, Ananda K. Coomaraswamy wrote an open letter to the Kandyan chiefs. It is still the closest thing we have to a mission statement.
He had travelled the island and seen traditional craft disappearing under colonial rule and machine-made goods. Temples such as the Dalada Maligawa and Degaldoruwa were being "restored" with commercial paints and weak realism in place of the old earth tones. He asked the chiefs to stop, and to see ancient buildings as valuable historical documents rather than things to be redecorated.
His Medieval Sinhalese Art, and his writing on the Vedas and the traditions around them, first lit the spark in our founder. Our co-founder shares it equally. Long before Yellow House existed, his way of truly seeing a civilisation's art was already shaping ours.
He wrote that architecture is the intelligent co-operation of all the arts, from the blacksmith to the painter. Every time we document, digitise or rebuild a piece of heritage, we try to keep that harmony intact for the children who come after us.
